Reestablishing the Central New York Branch of the American Society for Microbiology
The Central New York (CNY) Branch of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) has a documented history dating back to 1921, predating the Western and Eastern New York Branches. In 1935, the Journal of Bacteriology published proceedings that included activities from the Central New York State Branch. This branch later folded in 2000.

With growing numbers of microbiologists within Central New York, we have decided that it is time to re-open the doors to this chapter! A number of microbiologists at the various universities within Syracuse (Syracuse University, Upstate Medical University, SUNY ESF) have already formed an unofficial community that carries out social and networking events, educational workshops, and research collaborations. Our goal is to formalize our organization, build connections with other microbiologists in Central New York beyond Syracuse, and create a chapter where all sub-fields of microbiology are represented and celebrated! We aim to create a supportive community of microbiologists across all career stages.

In order to re-establish this chapter, we need your help with the following:  "a petition signed by at least 25 Full ASM Members in good standing who reside within the geographical region." The zip codes listed for the “old” Central New York branch are 13000-13299 and 13400-13999

For any questions, please email Jennifer Goff (Assistant Professor at SUNY ESF, jegoff@esf.edu)

I am an ASM member working in industry or within a medical setting, can I sign?
Yes!

I am at Cornell/Ithaca College, can I sign even though my zip code is not included?
From my understanding of the lore, Cornell was, historically, the epicenter of the Central New York Branch. We would love to have you sign and join us!

I am at one of the universities in Rochester, can I sign even though my zip code is not included?
Absolutely!

I am at another college in upstate New York that is not within those zip codes, can I still sign?
Absolutely!

I am already a member of the Eastern/Western Branch of ASM. Can I be a member of that branch and the Central New York Branch?
You can be a member of as many branches as you like.

I am in New York City or out of state, can I sign to support you?
While anyone can technically sign, the goal here is to show interest in this chapter within our geographical region (say within a two hour drive of Syracuse). So, ask yourself the question "would I drive to Syracuse to attend an Central New York branch meeting?" to determine if you should sign or not.

Are your meetings only going to be in Syracuse?
Not necessarily! We would like to rotate through other cities in the region if we have members there!
