Technologist Code of Ethics Survey
The following survey is a tool to collect public engagement comments and interest in the technologist code of ethics. Voluntary responses are managed by the Digital Impact and Governance Initiative (DIGI) and the Public Interest Tech (PIT) programs at New America.
The tech industry workforce plays an outsized - yet often underappreciated - role in shaping broader democratic and civic trends. Establishing a technologist code of ethics, with the ambitious aim of realigning the values, practices, and standards of tech development and deployment, will require us to rethink the transformative ways in which technology impacts communities around the world in order to prioritize human rights, privacy, and people-centered outcomes. This work is just one piece of a complicated puzzle to help support a rights-respecting digital future. This code alone isn’t a panacea to all of our tech-related challenges – but is instead a necessary complement to ongoing legal, regulatory, and multilateral policy work. Please consider helping us as we map out this work to draft an open and inclusive technologist code of ethics and a plan for implementing it. We are building a field of changemakers interested in:
- Creating people-centered outcomes and shaping technological innovations in service to global and local communities.
- Pursuing collaborations between technologists and no-technical social innovators like digital rights activists, human rights defenders, and journalists.
- Leveraging existing education programs and resources.
- Centering democratic values such as equity, diversity, and justice in the process.
- Strengthening networks of technologists, activists, advocates, and private sector partners, particularly in the global South.
- Establishing new cross-institutional projects and programs.
- Developing an implementation plan attached to the code.
- Providing actionable recommendations.
Thank you.
