C.L. McDaniel was loved by many in the sport of eventing, particularly the young riders. He valued and
modeled horsemanship, sportsmanship, positive attitude, integrity, strong work ethic, service to others,
and teamwork to young riders everywhere as he traveled the show circuit with his granddaughter. In an
effort to memorialize his dedication to instilling those qualities in the youth in our sport, NTEA has
instituted the C.L. McDaniel Youth “Earn Your Spurs” Award.
Written Nominations for the McDaniel
Award must be received by NTEA by the deadline and in the manner specified on the NTEA website. It is
the Nominator’s responsibility to ensure that the paperwork is received by the deadline and to confirm
with the Committee Chairperson.
Based on nominations received by the deadline, the Scholarships & Awards Committee will make a
recommendation and the Board will choose and notify the winner. The winner must privately accept the
award. The winner will then be publicly announced at the next Awards Banquet. At the banquet, the
winner will receive: a set of spurs in an engraved box and a $250 cash award to be used at the winner’s
discretion for personal educational activities in equestrian sports, especially eventing. If qualified
nominations are not received or if the winner does not accept, the Board may choose to extend the
deadline, name an alternate winner, or not to give the Award for the current year.
Award Criteria: Nominees for the C.L. McDaniel Youth “Earn Your Spurs” Award must be:
- Current Youth
member of NTEA between the ages of 13-21
- Exhibit the qualities of horsemanship, sportsmanship,
positive attitude, integrity, strong work ethic, service to others, and teamwork,
- Must not have

Committee members, and their immediate family members are not eligible for the current year’s
McDaniel Award.
