The Duke Men's Project invites you to participate in our Learning Community. The Learning Community is a nine-week long discussion group that meets weekly throughout the semester. Our goals are to examine the ways we present – or don't present – our masculinities, both consciously and subconsciously. We aim to better understand how masculinity exists both on and off our campus – often in toxic ways – and begin the work of unlearning violence. We want to explore, dissect, and construct an intersectional understanding of masculinity and manhood, as well as to create spaces that challenge masculine privilege. We aim to explore how masculinity affects those who are not men, and how we can all push ourselves to be better people and to effectively stand with the non-men in our lives and beyond.
This semester, we hope to have concurrent Learning Communities, each at 7–9 on a consistent weekday evening in the Women's Center on East Campus (under the CoffeeHouse behind Wilson Dorm). To maximize the number of people we can accommodate, please indicate your availability.
We want to emphasize that joining the Learning Community is a weekly commitment to be taken seriously. Attendance must be a priority, as building community is essential to the work we do. We request that you only complete this form if you feel comfortable taking this on. Grappling with these issues and being vulnerable will be challenging, and we want to make sure that we are all committed to doing this work together. The first sessions of the Learning Community will be during the week of September 17th, 2018
This is intentionally an interest – not application – form; we want to know more about you and your engagement with these issues. This is not a competitive process.
Given our focus on masculinity and manhood, our programming is oriented towards engaging with male-identified or masculine-of-center students. However, The Duke Men’s Project’s core tenet is accountability - we want our work and mission to be both transparent and a continual work in progress. If you have feedback, questions, or criticism, please use this form!! We will respond to you promptly, and you can fill it out anonymously if you want.
