The East Africa Human Rights Institute in collaboration with the National Coalitions of Human Rights Defenders in Uganda and the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition are organising a short course for HRDs as part of continuing legal and human rights education for HRDs. The theme of this short course is “Ensuring the safety & security of HRDs during the electoral related processes in the EAC sub-region”. The main aim is to empower HRDs with preventive and responsive skills, strategies and facilities that build their resilience during electoral process. HRDs will learn more about laws and policies governing electoral process across the region, particularly leveraging on best practices and experience in managing electoral related challenges.
Election times often poses security challenges to HRDs. There are normally reported attacks against human rights defenders who are targeted for what they do or for who they are more so during electoral seasons. In the past years, the extreme risks and dangers of defending human rights were apparent in numerous countries across the world with human rights defenders facing threats, harassment, smear campaigns and stigmatization which are commonly used to delegitimize human rights defenders and undermine their work.
This learning opportunity is for only few members from National HRDs coalitions from , Uganda and Tanzania. Participants should be leaders from registered human rights organisations forming part of National HRDs Coalition in three countries. This online short course will be conducted on 14th October 2024. Few selected participants will be provided with a modest internet allowance to facilitate their effective participation.
All applications should be done through this google form by 12/10/2024.
