2024 Four Corners Convening Call for Presenters

What does being a good relative in computer science mean?

Being a good relative means first acknowledging your relationship not only with each other but also with our non-human relatives. We call them non-five fingered beings - the land, the air, the water, our mother-earth. Acknowledging our world as living, in all ways, sets our path towards harmony. It is up to us to shake hands, meet one another and establish our relation, our kinship as well. In our work together, we serve each other as relatives. Our teachers approach their classes with the mindset of teaching their children. Our partnerships can honor the treatment of our water, our land, and our well being. We, as a community, can choose to work in harmony, honoring each other, as relatives. We can learn to be good relatives in all areas of life, including in Computer Science education.

Sessions should be relevant to Computer Science education and instruction, and applicable to educators' classroom practices. How will your professional learning session help teachers to encourage and support Native American students to enter a CS pathway or work toward a future CS career? Sessions will be scored against the criteria outlined in the scoring rubric, accessible here. Preference for acceptance will be given to interactive/collaborative sessions that model evidence-based best teaching practices and incorporate Culturally Relevant Instruction.
