The Southern Foodways Alliance is now accepting applications for the 2018 Oral History Workshop, hosted on the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford, Mississippi July 22-27, 2018.
The oral history workshop is open to beginning and intermediate oral historians. Undergraduate and graduate students, professors, educators, and SFA members are welcome to apply. Students will be introduced to the field through SFA oral histories and documentary examples. Participants will learn SFA methods and approaches to oral history, audio recording skills and techniques, and an introduction to digital photography. The workshop will culminate with an oral history fieldwork trip in the Oxford area.
Oral history provides a unique opportunity to cultivate speaking, writing, and critical thinking skills. If you have an interest in gaining fieldwork experience or enhancing your existing skills, we invite you to apply.
There are no workshop tuition fees for students. Travel stipends are provided to students to help offset travel and lodging expenses.
Tuition is $600 for accepted applicants who are not currently enrolled in a college or university. Please note that travel, lodging, and meals are separate expenses and are the responsibility of participants.
The SFA is invested in bringing together a diverse set of workshop attendees. With the generous support of an SFA member and chef in the region, we are pleased to be able to offer two full scholarships to applicants of color who are currently enrolled in a college or university. These funds fully cover the workshop, travel, and lodging. Applicants who wish to be considered for this scholarship should complete section 3 on this application.
Applications are due April 13, 2018 by 5 PM CDT. Incomplete or late applications will not be reviewed. Please direct any questions to Afton Thomas at firstname.lastname@example.org.
