Preamble: From Insight to Action for a Climate-Resilient Mediterranean
The Mediterranean, a cradle of civilizations, faces an unprecedented climate crisis. While awareness is high, a persistent gap remains between attitude and action. The Interreg Euro-MED "NUDGES" project was born from a simple, powerful idea: that to foster change, we must design policies that work with human nature, not against it.
Through six pioneering proofs-of-concept across the MED region, we have successfully demonstrated the feasibility of using behavioural incentives to steer urban communities towards sustainability. We have leveraged the immediacy of our five senses and the catalytic power of new generations to inspire lasting environmental compliance and affirmative climate actions.
We have learned that small, thoughtful interventions can create significant impact. Now, as we transition from a project to a permanent community, we codify our learnings and commit to a shared path forward.
Our Guiding Principles
We, the members of the NUDGES Community of Interest, subscribe to the following principles:
Embrace Behavioural Wisdom: We recognise that lasting change is not achieved by mandates alone. We will champion the integration of behavioural science into climate policy, creating interventions that are intuitive, easy, and effective for our citizens.
Harness the Power of Sensation and Emotion: We believe that climate action must be felt, not just understood. We will continue to explore and share creative, sensory-based "nudges" that make sustainable choices more tangible, memorable, and desirable.
Amplify Intergenerational Influence: We affirm that school children and young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but powerful agents of change today. We will actively engage them as catalysts to accelerate the sustainable transformation of our entire society.
Commit to Evidence-Based Collaboration: Our strength lies in our shared experience. We pledge to openly share our successes, our failures, and our lessons learned. We will build upon our collective evidence to refine our methods and scale our impact, transforming the Mediterranean into a living lab for climate innovation.
Build a Legacy of Open Knowledge: We will maintain and grow the collaborative ecosystem initiated by the NUDGES project. We commit to keeping our tools, insights, and networks open and accessible to all stakeholders dedicated to a sustainable Mediterranean future.
