Course Description
Prerequisite for 9th only: Grade of “B” or better in 8th grade regular English.

This introductory level course teaches students the required skills and knowledge needed to
sustain and navigate in interpersonal settings. Students will be targeting visual-spatial awareness,
develop students’ use of facial expressions, mouth morphemes, expressive and receptive skills
using American Sign Language, and gain knowledge on American Deaf Culture.
Required Materials:
  • Device for recording
  • Video editing apps (inShot, CapCut, Screencastify, or a teacher approved app.)
  • YouTube Account or Google Drive to save work (YouTube accounts will be private and work will be published as “Unlisted”, ensuring the privacy and confidentiality of the students.)
  • Folder (Optional: This will be for any papers, worksheets, assignments that you will have to hold on to for future use.)

On Infinite Campus you will find instant access to information about grades. Feedback on assignments and links to assignments will be included on each assignment on Infinite Campus. Descriptions of what assignments entails will also be accessible on Infinite Campus. Please be patient if you see your grade in class hasn't changed in a while. It might mean grades haven't been inputted yet. 
Behaviors
Students are to treat each other and the teacher with respect. Students will listen when other students are speaking or signing, and raise their hands to be acknowledged. Students will observe rules of RESPECT both to others in the class and classroom materials. Bullying of any kind will not be tolerated in the classroom. I do understand there is a difference between being funny and joking around with friends, compared to targeting and bullying others in the classroom. To preserve the instructional time and to maintain a safe environment in the classroom, any disruption in the classroom will be addressed with an appropriate consequence and student behaviors will be recorded as well as the teacher will contact parents/guardians.
Attendance & Absences
If you know AHEAD OF TIME that you will be missing class due to sports or a planned trip please make sure to communicate with me of your absence, and to check Mrs. B's Website for assignments you will be missing. If there is an absence due to an illness, please make time to speak with me to discuss a plan in order to complete assignments in a timely manner. 

YOU are RESPONSIBLE for any time missed in class and to ensure assignments are completed and submitted in a timely manner. 
If you have an EXCUSED absence you will be allowed an allotted time frame to complete the work. Once missing work is completed, students must complete this form: Missing Work Form
Assignments
Assignments vary between team building activities, projects, and independent work requiring students to either record themselves signing vocabulary and stories, and watching videos and answering questions on videos. Due to American Sign Language being a visual language, participation and application of using the language is mandatory.
Missing Work Submission Policy
When is missing work accepted?
Missing lessons will ONLY be accepted once students have completed it in the classroom. You can come in before school, brunch, lunch or after school to complete any missing LESSONS. 

 How do I Submit Missing Work?
Missing  LESSONS you want to submit for credit MUST be submitted to this link: Missing Work Submission Form 

 What if my assignment is marked missing and the teacher notates that they do not have access to the video?
Any videos that have access requests from the teacher must change their public view settings to "Anyone with Link" - "Viewer" access OR "Unlisted" (YouTube). If your video is uploaded to your Google Drive, make sure to change the "share" settings to "Anyone with Link". Once you have changed the settings, complete the  Missing Work Submissions. 

 What is the deadline to submit missing work?
All missing work will be accepted up until 2 weeks prior to finals week.

What about ASL 3 and ASL 4 students?  
Missing work will NOT be accepted in ASL 3 or ASL 4. ASL 3 and ASL 4 students, have an adequate amount of time in and outside of class to complete assignments. Should you be absent or sick, make sure to plan your week appropriately. Ensure to accommodate for unexpected absences and complete work ahead of time. 
DO NOT WAIT last minute to complete or submit work. 
I do understand unexpected absences due to illnesses or being sick. In order for me to accept missing work, you must provide a doctor's note.
Late Projects Policy
What happens if I turn in a project late?
If you are submitting a project late, while class time was given to work on the assignment, you must HAND WRITE a letter to Mrs. Beydler on the reason why you submitted your work late. Your excuse must be within reason and you must fill ONE full page for FULL CREDIT. If not, you will only be earning 50% maximum credit.

You will only be allowed to do this 1 time! Afterwards, any other projects submitted late will be receiving 50% maximum credit once submitted.

What are Beydler Bucks for?
Beydler Bucks are the classroom "currency". BEYDLER BUCKS will be used for the snack cabinet I have in my classroom. Food items in classroom vary depending on the item. 
BEYLDER BUCKS can also be used to go towards Extra Credit in the classroom. Each Extra Credit point is $10 Beydler Bucks. 

How do you earn Beydler Bucks?
Participation and Answering Questions: 
You can earn Beydler Bucks by participating, answering questions using ASL or English (depending on the activity). 
Games: 
Winning teams or participating teams (depending on activity) can earn Beydler Bucks.
Hands Up/Voices Off: 
Whenever we are having times to primarily communicate in ASL, students participating in this activity will be able to earn Beydler Bucks for their participation. Students who are not signing or talking will NOT earn Beydler Bucks. 
Helping with Clean Up or "Caught being Good" during class:
Students who help out with trash pick up, putting away and charging chromebooks, etc. can earn $1 for each task! 
Bathroom Policy
Students leaving to use the bathroom must notify the teacher before leaving. Students will be taking the bathroom pass with them whenever they are leaving the classroom to use the bathroom. Any students abusing their time leaving the classroom for the bathroom will be recorded, parent contact will be made, and further disciplinary actions will be taken.
Classroom Engagement Points
Students participating in answering questions in class will earn points. Students will need to earn 10 points (minimum for full credit).
Academic Integrity: A Key to Success
Academic integrity is crucial for building trust and respect in our learning environment. It's important to understand that cheating or using completing assignments dishonestly can lead to serious consequences, including earning a zero on that assignment. Upholding honesty not only helps you grow as a student but also prepares you for the future. Let’s commit to doing our best and valuing our own work! Due to our ever changing world, our district has created a system that we will be following to indicate appropriate ways of using AI.
AI Use Guidelines for Williams S Hart District
AI District Policy 2025–26
Our district uses a “traffic light” system to help students understand when and how AI tools like ChatGPT or Grammarly may be used for assignments. Each task will be labeled with a red, yellow, or green robot icon—accompanied by text—to indicate the level of AI use allowed. A red light means AI use is not permitted and all work must be completed independently. 
A yellow light means AI tools may be used only with teacher permission and under specific guidelines. 
A green light means AI use is allowed to support learning (e.g., brainstorming, editing), as long as students follow class expectations. Any misuse of AI will be addressed according to the district’s Academic Honesty policy (5131.9).

  1. Question of the Week: Students will read the question for the week on the calendar. They will read the gloss, learn how to sign the question and ask the teacher the question in ASL. Students are responsible for writing down the teacher's response on their forms.
