Life Science Innovation Bootcamp Fall 2024 powered by the New York I-Corps Hub

A consortium of medical school partners are offering a Regional Life Science Innovation Bootcamp! The program provides innovators with a hands-on learning experience to successfully transfer research or ideas into products and services that benefit human health. This rapid two-week program utilizes the Lean Startup methodology, helping teams engage in 20+ customer discovery interviews with potential stakeholders in the healthcare, biotech, and life science sectors. 

Program Highlights:

  • Customer Discovery in Life Sciences: Teams will learn to communicate with customers, partners, and competitors in the healthcare and life science markets, navigating the complexities and uncertainties of launching a venture in these fields.

  • Funding Opportunity: Eligible teams that successfully adhere to program requirements may receive up to $1,500 in reimbursements for customer discovery interviews, including travel to relevant conferences and trade shows in the USA.

The course will be entirely virtual via Zoom. The Entrepreneurial Lead must be able to attend all three workshop dates!

Application Process: 

Applications are being reviewed on a rolling basis until Tuesday, October 22, 2024, 12:00 PM ET. The next step in the process is a Zoom interview-discussion with the team and the Course Instructor(s). The deadline to book and complete an interview is Friday, October 25, 2024, 4:00 PM ET.

We recommend applying EARLY so teams have ample time to schedule the required 25-minute Zoom interview discussion. Upon completion of this application, you will see a link to a Setmore Calendar which is where you will schedule your Zoom interview-discussion.

Why participate in the Life Science Innovation Bootcamp?

Gain deep customer insights into the therapeutics, diagnostics, medical devices, and digital health markets, to better align your technology with real-world clinical and healthcare needs.

- Receive guidance from experienced mentors, often experts in life sciences, who help navigate regulatory challenges and complex paths to commercialization in biotech or healthcare innovation.

- Identify commercial potential for your technology needed to submit an SBIR/STTR proposal to NIH, NSF, DoD, NASA and more for non-diluted funding.

- Acquire up to $1,500 in this Regional program for Customer Discovery related expenses such as traveling to conferences and industry trade shows. After the program, academic-based research teams receive lineage and eligibility to apply for a $50,000 I-Corps Grant to participate in the NSF National I-Corps Teams Program.

- Learn what it takes to turn your research into a startup company.

Eligibility for NY Area Life Science Innovation Bootcamp Fall 2024

- Teams of 1+ committed members that may be faculty, students (graduate-student encouraged), staff, etc. from any university or national lab.
- Technology or research idea explored should be STEAM focused
- Must be able to attend all 3 scheduled workshops AND dedicate time outside of the sessions to get and do discovery interviews (20+)
NY-based "Community" teams such as startup companies working on high-tech solutions (without academic-lineage) may be considered

Program Hosts
Team Background
Teams should consists of 1+ members - an EL and an optional but encouraged additional member of the following roles:

Entrepreneurial Lead - The Entrepreneurial Lead (EL) is typically a postdoctoral researcher, graduate student, or any other student. In community/startup teams, the EL is likely CEO and main founder. The EL possesses relevant technical knowledge and a deep commitment to investigate the commercial landscape surrounding the innovation. The EL should also be prepared to support the transition of the technology, should the I-Corps™ project demonstrate a level of readiness appropriate to leave the academic institution.

Co-Entrepreneurial Lead - A fellow student or team/company member who is co-leading and supporting the customer discovery interview process. Maybe a co-founder.

Technical Lead/Principal Investigator - The Principal Investigator (PI) serves as the technical lead and project manager. This person is usually a faculty/staff at a university or a CTO in a company. In most scenarios, the TL is the most member most knowledge on the technical aspects of the project, and maybe also become a co-founder.

Industry Mentor - The Industry Mentor (IM) is typically an experienced entrepreneur, or business executive with industry experience. The IM guides teams forward, helping them interpret customer comments, assisting the team in contacting relevant people, and keeping the team honest about what they are hearing from the marketplace. This member may also be someone familiar with the Lean LaunchPad Methodology and the Business Model Canvas, and/or has gone through I-Corps before.
