Hawaiʻi Sociological Association 41st Annual Conference in Hilo, Hawaiʻi February 22-23, 2020
Theme: Acts of Protest: Protectors, Peoples, Places, and Practices

The Hawai‘i Sociological Association (HSA) is pleased to convene its 41st Annual Conference to be held at the University of Hawai’i, Hilo. The conference’s theme, “Acts of protest: Protectors, peoples, places, and practices” explores how various forms of dissent have shaped and are shaped by history, knowledge, culture, values, and practices. These acts of protest inform current realities and mold visions of the future. A prominent example of this in Hawai‘i is the visible resistance to building the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) on Mauna Kea, which has galvanized a community focused on protecting Indigenous rights and environmental stewardship. In this spirit, HSA's 41st conference invites papers and posters that examine the ways in which acts of resistance have shaped social interactions and provoked social change. Sociological research and teaching practices conducted in Native Hawaiian and Indigenous contexts are particularly encouraged.

HSA welcomes submissions of papers that fall outside of the conference theme, but encourages participants to consider how their perspectives, processes, or conclusions connect to the theme of protest and resistance. Papers and sessions on teaching methodologies and professional development (e.g. non-academic careers in sociology, preparing for the job market, graduate school, and tenure track) are also welcomed.

To submit a proposal, please complete the submission form below.
