Exhibiting Artist Member Application 2024
Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in becoming an Artist Member of the Artists Association of Nantucket. AAN’s mission is to foster the visual arts on Nantucket through exhibition, education, and preservation. Together we have been creating a vibrant arts community since 1945.

AAN welcomes new artists to our two hundred and fifty plus Artist Membership through three application reviews each year. Along with the annual Artist Membership dues of $250, we also offer a $50 Junior Artist Membership for artists under 25 years of age or younger. Accepted artist members are invited to show their work at the many rotating exhibitions at the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery on Washington Street, the Big Gallery on Straight Wharf, the Champion Gallery located at the Visual Arts Center and online. All Artist Members receive a 65% commission on all sales, and a 10% discount on all classes and workshops. Artist Members are also invited to attend our fundraisers and receptions throughout the year and enjoy connecting to fellow artists, patrons, and collectors.

Artist Membership Requirements
  1. Three or more months of residency on Nantucket. Proof of residency may be verified at the time of review with either a copy of you Nantucket driver's license, or copies of three consecutive months of two different utility bills which include your name and Nantucket address. (If you qualify as a Nantucket resident but cannot verify residency in these ways please contact amreview@nantucketarts.org before submitting your application)
  2. Prompt payment of annual Artist Member dues.
  3. An annual donation of your artwork to benefit AAN as a non-profit organization. Junior artists (age 25 or younger) are exempt from this requirement.
  4. Exhibited artwork is professionally presented in all gallery shows. See "Exhibition Ready" guidelines listed below.
Review Process
  1. Fill out this application and wait for an email from AAN confirming your review date.
  2. Once confirmed drop off your artwork, proof of residency, and any other additional paperwork on the Thursday or Friday prior to your review date and be prepared to pick up your work the following Monday. 
  3. Applicants will be notified of the Committee's decision via email within 14 business days.
  4. Decisions include the Committee's feedback. If you are not accepted the Committee's goal will be to help you understand their decision and re-apply with more success.
  5. Letters of Acceptance include an artist agreement, W-9 form and other required membership materials.
Submitting Artwork
Once your review date is confirmed you will submit 5 of your strongest artworks and a small portfolio which presents a cohesive series that exemplifies your style and could be exhibited as a group. 
Artwork will be evaluated in terms of skill in medium, consistent quality, and demonstration of a compelling and original perspective and thoughtful choice. 

Present 4 of your 5 artworks in a professional "Exhibition Ready" manner:
  • All artwork must be labeled in back with artist's name, title, medium, and dimensions. 
  • Works on paper should be presented in a frame with appropriate hanging hardware.
  • Frames must be in excellent condition, equipped with hanging wire or sawtooth bar.
  • 3D artworks must stand or rest in a stable position or submitted with a base.
  • Unframed gallery-wrapped canvases must have clean painted edges. 
  • Photographs printed on metal must have a solid backing and ready to hang.
  • Due to limited space please submit works less than 40 inches.
