DESIGN LAB OVERVIEWThe Black Teacher Project recognizes the importance of lifting up Black teachers as leaders in reimagining schools. Black teachers possess a unique and critical lens for abolishing oppressive school policy and transforming schools into liberated learning communities where all students can thrive and belong.
As you navigate teaching in these challenging times, we invite you to engage in a Liberatory Design process with us. In this 6-session program, you will be guided by equity-centered frameworks and protocols to design school experiences that center your students' voices/experiences, healing, and well-being—as well as your own. We are most powerful when we take collective responsibility and action, so as we respond to teaching and learning needs, let's learn from our students, our communities, and each other to design practices that are liberating and rooted in love. Each participant is eligible to receive a stipend of up to $625!
Together, we will hold each other in an intentional, bold, and mindful space to:
- Build our leadership identity and toolkit to reimagine classrooms and schools as liberated learning environments
- Understand Liberatory Design and embrace the leadership opportunity of becoming a designer
- Make meaning and connection around the importance of healing and your identified equity challenge
- Begin to define a sphere of influence in key areas related to healing in the classroom
- Support student well-being and voice through a co-design process centered on healing
- Present prototype designs at the end of the course so other teachers can learn from your design and process
Please note: This program is intended for teams of two people per team.
