In 1994 the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) discovered Trichloroethylene in the 2200 block of East 21st Street North (Williams' & Sons Gas Station). KDHE knowing that the chemical shouldn't be there, began to look for the source. The source was found to be coming from the Union Pacific Railroad on 29th Street and Grove. KDHE says that there seems to be no documentation that they are aware of, however they determined that the contamination occurred at that location in the 70's or 80's.
This chemical is said to be a carcinogen that causes cancer (especially kidney cancer), affects the human central nervous system (CSN), heart, liver, kidneys and so much more. This information was taken from the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Hazard summary for Trichloroethylene.
There is currently a plume of Trichloroethylene that runs 2.9 miles long from 29th Street N. South to Murdock Street.
