This 3 day workshop is being held to rehabilitate and preserve the gravestones at the East Leland Cemetery as well as clear/prune vegetation obscuring gravestones. Proper gravestone cleaning will be taught.
The Leelanau Historical Society recognizes that the East Leland Cemetery contains numerous early settlers of Leelanau County and their families, representing a historical record and an integral part of the local heritage that must be preserved.
The workshop will be led by Ron Kelderhouse, who has led similar workshops for Bingham Township and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
Due to Covid Restrictions, all participates are required to wear a mask and obverse social distancing guidelines. We also ask that you bring your own tools, if possible. Gloves, shovel, kneeling pad and pruning shears to avoid the risk of spreading germs.
We are limiting this workshop to 20 participants. First priority will go to participants with connections to the cemetery.
Bottled water and pre-packaged snacks will be provided. Please bring your own lunch/sandwich and a camp chair.
Porta-potty will be on-site all three days. In the event of light to moderate rain we will have a canopy/tent. If you have an ez-up you are welcome to bring it as well.
If severe weather is predicted, we will communicate schedule changes via email and phone.
Do you have a personal connection to the East Leland Cemetery?
