AR+ Co-labs
AR+ Co-labs foster friendly, person-centered spaces as dynamos of good action research in different domains, from education to healthcare, inter-personal relationship, to sustainable organizing.

Co-labs invite participants to work within the collaborative spirit of action research. Each co-lab supports a learning orientation, bringing scholars and practitioners together, prioritizing mutual benefit and cultivating current work and the next generation. We inquire/practice in an integrated way that includes personal/ first-person, interpersonal/second-person and impersonal/third-person inquiry/practice. Involvement in our programs is by donation.

Key Characteristics of an AR+ Co-Lab:

• Emergent work, i.e. we don’t know the answer in advance;
• Interdisciplinary and multi-sectoral;
• People affected by the problem are part of the solution;
• Complexity and systems thinking;
• Genuine humility and admission that we don’t know how to solve the problem;

Co-labs involve:

• A dedicated space - virtual and F2F where sustainable;
• A complex challenge that draws people together;
• Key people who feel a deep need to address that challenge;
• A facilitative, emergent methodology;
• Results in action and social impact.
• Regular (monthly) meetings. By donation.

AR+ Knowledge, Action and Democracy Co-lab
AR+ Institutional Action Researchers Co-lab for Knowledge Action Democracy represents a network of advanced practitioners of action research, AKA global minded change agents who enjoy institutional support and who are seeking to accomplish more together. This group offers a rotating home to AR+.

Founding members include: Center for Healthcare Improvement, Chalmers Institute (SWE); Nyenrode Business School (Netherlands); IDS at U. Sussex (UK), ARAMA, (Istanbul), Center for Agro-ecology, Water and Resilience (UK), The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (USA), Royal Roads University (CAN), De LaSalle University, Manila, (PHIL), Enlivening Edge (Global).

Relational Action Inquiry/RAIR
The AR+ Co-lab for Relational Action Inquiry, also called RAIR, is an on-line community of inquiry/practice with a dozen or so women and men from around the world who meet monthly with the intention to inquire into how power dynamics (and attraction dynamics) are liberated/stuck in their (organizational) lives.

Not to judge or force change, but to inquire, together. When else do we do deal with the ‘hot potato’ of interpersonal power/attraction? This co-lab started as a follow up to the publication of Eros/Power: Love in the Spirit of Inquiry, by Bradbury and Torbert.

The express aim is to support the transformation of power dynamics toward collaboration.

AR+ Participative Health
Convening healthcare personnel interested in more patient centric healthcare delivery, emphasis is on organizational transformation of health systems and participative management of chronic illness.

Convenes monthly. Open to new members who are involved in healthcare transformation. Emphasis on patient centric, participative and systems oriented efforts.

AR+ Teaching & Education Co-Lab and e-Theatre of Inquiry for Educators
A community of educators, started in 2016, with current members in North America, Europe, and Asia, who are transforming teaching and learning by expanding the use of action research in teaching, service, and research. Convenes monthly; smaller groups meet on ad hoc basis around projects of their creation.

Open to new members (pre-K to grad school) as we focus more intently on: (1) sharing AR teaching materials and developing webinars for faculty, staff, and students; (2) advocating for institutional embrace of action research; and (3) certifying action researching educator practitioners.

AR+ Organizing (Sustainable) Futures.
Emphasis is on convening those who care about and wish to practice more democratic organizing in the contemporary work arena with use of participative work place methods (e.g. self-management) that bring reflection and action cycles to the work of “liberating” organizations for a more sustainable world. In design stage.

We may decide that sustainability issues, such as climate change are distinct and require a separate co-lab.)

AR+ Mindful Integrating Catalysts and Activists (MICA)
Offers a weekly online meditation space (MICA I) and a monthly cohort program (MICA II). I & II may be taken together or separately.
MICA I
Welcoming change agents and activists to a meditation space in the Zen style of practice with open awareness.

Weekly mindfulness meditation sessions online. Expect +/- 30 minutes of silent and/or guided meditation and, afterwards, short Q&A focused on the practice of mindful meditation in the midst of our lives and action researching.

This is a space for self care and self refreshment, where we can offer/receive the support of community. Welcoming change agents and activists to a meditation space in the Zen style of practice with open awareness. Hilary leads weekly sessions. Expect +/- 30 minutes of silent and/or guided meditation and, afterwards, short Q&A focused on the practice of mindful meditation in the midst of our lives.

This is a space for self care and self refreshment, where we can offer/receive the support of community. Hilary is a teacher in the Zen tradition whose first meditation retreat was in 1989. She has since received permission/encouragement to teach from her Zen teacher in the tradition of “Ordinary Mind Zen,” which deemphasizes the esoteric trappings of Zen while cultivating our natural orientation toward the transformative promise of deep silence, compassion and wisdom so that we may benefit all sentient beings.

MICA II. In design stage, join us!
The words Mindful Integrating Catalysts and Activists that make up the name of the co-lab, suggest our focus: we’re creating a space for action researching change agents as we inquire/practice with integrating first person inquiry/practice as a complement to our usual second person focus.

Key theory and practice components may include some, or all, of the following: Adult developmental leadership; Organizational Learning; OD; Group Dynamics; Participative Action Learning/Research; Experiential-conversational learning, Embodied Cognition.

Practices of soft systems thinking, Facilitated Dialogue and Arts based methods are especially emphasized to help overcome the preponderance of analytical thought in action research. As is the spirit of action research, we will share facilitation. Participants are encouraged to bring (or create) projects for peer learning/coaching.

Our shared intention is to become more aware of how to serve all stakeholders in our action research. Having/starting a regular mindfulness practice is strongly encouraged.
