Please Support NERRS Coastal Training

Dear Members of Congress,

We, the undersigned, urge you to support full funding for the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) and its Coastal Training Programs that serve 24 states and Puerto Rico. This funding is critical to continue the vital work these programs do to strengthen our communities and support wise management of our estuaries and coasts.

Reserve Coastal Training programs provide workshops, training, and technical assistance that help us build the skills and knowledge base we need to make informed, science-based decisions about the natural resources in our communities. These activities not only deliver information, they also build connections. At Reserves, municipal decision makers, land trusts, state agencies, resource managers, nonprofits of all kinds, and many other stakeholders come together in ways that encourage shared problem-solving to collective solutions.

Many challenges addressed by Coastal Training Programs relate to our ability to adapt to the changes along our coasts. With the support of these programs, our communities are better equipped to assess risks, develop adaptation strategies, and implement policies that reduce vulnerability to extreme weather, flooding, erosion, habitat degradation, environmental hazards, or other threats. Central to this work is the Coastal Training Programs’ ability to connect research and local data to our work as they translate complex scientific findings into practical, actionable knowledge.

Each year, more than 13,000 individuals participate in these programs, including representatives of industries that rely on healthy coastal lands and waters, such as tourism, fishing, and agriculture. These interactions have a ripple effect through the general public, leading to greater community involvement and support for actions that protect the places that deliver so many benefits to our communities.

We urge you to support full funding for the NERRS and its Coastal Training Program, which are a cornerstone of our national effort to build more resilient coastal communities, and an example of how state needs and federal resources come together to pay dividends now, and for future generations.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.
