Join us on a journey to visit some of the key institutions and places of significance to Bharatanatyam in Tamil Nadu, India. Listen to the dance scholars , historians and experts as they unravel the mysteries and guide you on these visits.
This 6 day tour takes you through the heart of the land of dance and music of South India.

DAY 1 - Monday 16th December 2019
Visit Kalakshetra Foundation (Thiruvanmiyur) and experience a day of learning at this world renowned dance institution founded by Rukminidevi Arundale.

DAY 2 - Tuesday 17th December 2019
Visit to Bhartha-Illango Foundation for Asian Culture (Pattipulam) and be inspired by the Dr Padma Subrahmaniyam’s talk and LecDem, and admire the amazing gallery of the 108 Karanas. Enter into the magical world of the Natya Shastra and pay homage to sage Bharatha. Visit the 7th century Pallava Dynasty Monuments (Mamallapuram), and the Nataraja Temple (Chidambaram). You may even be lucky to perform in front of the sacred Nataraja idol in this holy shrine.

DAY 3 - Wednesday 18th December 2019
Visit the beautiful Tyagesa Temple (Thiruvarur) and learn the nuances of the pada varnam – “Mohamana” in praise of this mystique lord from Priyadarsini Govind.

DAY 4 - Thursday 19th December 2019
Visit two great Chola monuments - Brihadisvara Temple (Tanjore) and Airavatesvara Temple (Darasuram) guided by Dr Chithra Madhavan. Admire the intricate carvings and the grand architectural feats during the golden age of South Indian history.

DAY 5 - Friday 20th December 2019
Visit the Saraswathi Mahal Library (Tanjore), the Maratha Palace Complex (Tanjore) and to the home of the Tanjore Quartet, guided by Lakshmi Viswanathan. You may even have a chance to dance at the court of King Serfoji, where the Bharatanatyam Margam was invented.

The tours starts and ends in Chennai, the participants have also a choice of departing from Trichy. Participants make their own arrangements to reacg Chennai. You may wish to stay back in Chennai to attend the following key dance events after the tour
1. Natya Darshan Festival - 21st and 22nd December 2019 Convened by Priya Murale
2. Natya Kala Conference - 26th to 30th December 2019 Convened by Rama Vaidhyanathan
3. Annual Dance Festival at the Madras Music Academy - 3rd to 11th January 2020

We are happy to help to arrange accommodation in Chennai if required.

Cost of the tour including local transportation in airconditioned coaches, accommodation at 4 star hotels and resorts, all meals and visits to these places of interest including a day at Kalakshetra foundation will cost S$950 per person. For Dance India participants the cost will be at S$900 per person. Price may slightly vary for preference of Single / Double / Triple room sharing accommodation during the tour.
