Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Minneapolis Public Schools! These volunteer opportunities are a part of MPS' universal bike education initiative, with the goal of teaching all MPS 4th and 5th how to safely ride a bike on the streets and trails of Minneapolis.
No Special Skills Needed:
We are looking for people who care about youth and want to bring fun, life-impacting experiences to them. Training will be provided for all volunteers. No prior education or experience required. Both on-bike and off-bike volunteers are needed.
Time Commitment:
Classes are generally held during school hours and each class is about an hour. Units generally last for about 2 weeks. You will be matched with a school to support during the two week unit and ideally you will commit 2 or more hours. (Volunteers with more time to give, can also be matched with multiple schools -thank you!)
The Details:
Along with our incredible teachers, volunteers are the backbone of this program! Bike units require much more preparation and planning than other units and your help is crucial to their success. Volunteer opportunities consist of assisting teachers during bike units held during fall and spring terms. Students learn how to safely ride a bicycle to prepare them for riding in Minneapolis. Units generally begin with on site instruction where students practice safe riding behaviors (bike checks, signaling, scanning, passing, etc.). Once students have the ability to safely ride, teachers are encouraged to take their students on a class bike ride along the streets and trails of Minneapolis to practice first hand what they have learned. Both on-bike and off-bike volunteers are needed.
Thank you for helping to bring this amazing and life changing opportunity to MPS students!
