In Support of Pitzer’s Pro-Israel Community
As students, faculty, alumni, and community members we stand with Pitzer’s pro-Israel community in rejecting the counterproductive efforts to end Pitzer’s study abroad relationship with the University of Haifa.
We are a diverse group with varying perspectives on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But we believe Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) are not the solution. We need more dialogue and academic exchange, not less. The road to peace and justice runs through collaboration, coexistence, and mutual understanding, not political agendas that fuel division and hate.
Enabling college students at Pitzer and throughout the United States to study abroad wherever they choose, including in Israel, is a longstanding tradition and a professional responsibility. Political objections are not valid reasons for denying students this right to exercise their own academic freedom. Further, attempts to limit educational opportunities that would allow students to learn first-hand from both Israelis and Palestinians undermine the values on which universities are built.
We recognize that Pitzer’s pro-Israel community has been attacked and silenced during this divisive time, but our message is clear: we are with you, we support you, and we have your backs. We hope that this message of solidarity offers some encouragement during this difficult time.
