Following the recent devastating disaster on floods in Kenya, that resulted in loss of human lives, displacement of people and destruction of property, The Ministry of Interior issued evacuation orders for persons living within riparian reserves along rivers, streams and other watercourses; as an immediate response to the floods. The result of the evacuation orders, have been inhumane evictions that have violated the human rights of people living in these settlements and leaving them in worse situations without temporary shelter or alternative accommodation leading to further suffering including the unreported death of children in Mathare settlement. The evacuation orders have also mostly prioritized unplanned settlements leaving high income planned settlements also sitting along riparian land. We urge you to sign the letter in solidarity with people living in unplanned settlements for the president to stop the inhumane evictions and for relocation of persons affected by evictions.
