Faculty Assessment
Assessment Report for Undergraduate Teaching:

The university-wide curriculum committee would like more evidence of clearly defined, measurable student learning outcomes that focus on the specific knowledge, skills, behaviors, or values taught through the CPLT undergraduate program (i.e. mentoring, thesis direction, courses, independent studies, and learning activities). They would like that data and information to be collected over time and analyzed through longitudinal metrics (i.e. evidence based progress of student writing, critical thinking, etc).

Please provide specific answers that will aid in the completion and submission of the departmental undergraduate report in the Fall semester (due ~October 1). Specific responses about assignments, theses, and outstanding student achievements that you have helped foster will greatly benefit the completion of the CPLT assessment report.

* Please respond by the end of the semester.

Established Learning Objectives
Currently, the CPLT Department identified the following criteria as learning outcome goals:

1. Students show “knowledge of literature of more than one national tradition.”
2. Students have “reading knowledge of a language other than English.”
3. Students will be able to "reflect explicitly on the theoretical assumptions" of their work and its relation to major theories in the field.
4. Students will be able "to discuss literary and cultural texts cogently and critically" in the accepted terms of the discipline.
_________________________________________________________________________________________

However, the university-wide committee did not feel that such criteria is sufficiently and clearly verifiable through longitudinal metrics. For example, the assessment committee would like to see more commentary and evidence of how we are measuring student learning outcomes over a period (i.e. over a semester, through completion of the Major, and/or in directed readings or theses).

OBJECTIVE #1: Students show “knowledge of literature of more than one national tradition.”
RESPONSE: Did your course(s) include literature in more than one national tradition? If so, which? Did assignments ask students to work in more than one national tradition? If so, how?
OBJECTIVE #2: Students have “reading knowledge of a language other than English.”
RESPONSE: Did coursework assume or require reading knowledge of a language other than English? Did students in their work draw on reading knowledge of languages other than English?
OBJECTIVE #3: Students will be able to "reflect explicitly on the theoretical assumptions" of their work and its relation to major theories in the field.
RESPONSE: Which theoretical frameworks or theorist(s) did your course(s) draw on? Did assignments expect students to reflect on particular theoretical frameworks? Do you have examples?
OBJECTIVE #4: Students will be able "to discuss literary and cultural texts cogently and critically" in the accepted terms of the discipline.
RESPONSE: Which literary and/or cultural texts did your course(s) focus on? Did assignments require or expect students to discuss these texts critically? Do you have examples?
Which CPLT course(s) did you teach this semester?
