Child Dedication
Dear Friends,

Congratulations on the new addition to your family! Parenting is an amazing adventure, one that God intends for us to take within the context of a caring and supportive community. As such, we are eager to come alongside you and your family and support the important work of family discipleship that you are embarking on.

This worksheet is intended to help prepare you for dedicating your child(ren) to the Lord in the presence of your church family. Please thoughtfully answer each question and then submit your response. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at jacob@arisestl.com.

Grace and Peace,
Jacob

What is Dedication?
As a church, Arise practices what is known as credo-baptism (or Believer’s Baptism), that is, we only baptism people who are old enough to make a conscious decision to proclaim faith in King Jesus. This doesn’t mean, however, that it’s not important to raise our children to know and love Jesus. To the contrary, parents who follow Jesus are called to recognize that our children belong first and foremost to God. God has given us the awesome responsibility of caring for His gifts, as well as the wonderful privilege of enjoying them.

Scripture reveals that one way the People of God have done this throughout history is through child dedication: the intentional setting apart of children for God and commitment to raise them in the way of the Lord God. In the Old Testament, Hannah presented her son, Samuel, to the Lord (1 Samuel 1). Likewise in the New Testament, we see that Mary and Joseph dedicated the baby Jesus to God at the Temple in Jerusalem (Luke 2.21-40). Today, we can make the same decision as parents, the decision to express faith in God on behalf of our child(ren).

What Happens from Here
First, we’ll review your answers and be in touch if we have any questions or clarifications. Then, we’ll touch base about scheduling your dedication.

On the Sunday of the dedication, please aim to arrive 15 minutes early for service to quickly run through what will happen during service. We’ll have seats up front reserved for you and your family. At the appropriate point in the service, we’ll call you forward. Due to limited stage space, we ask that only immediately family members (and godparents, if applicable) come forward. We’ll introduce you guys and your child(ren). Then, we’ll have some brief remarks on what dedication is and have some response questions for you and for the congregation. Then, we’ll pray for you child(ren) and take the customary dedication selfie before you return to your seats.

If that all sounds good, submit this form and we’ll get back to you as quickly as possible!
