SCAEA * Mary Whyte Art Educator Award
Established in 2007, the Mary Whyte Art Educator Award is designed to highlight a visual art teacher in a South Carolina public school who has demonstrated superior commitment to their students and to their craft. The award is accompanied by a cash prize of $2,500 and a $2,500 gift certificate for art supplies. This award is administered and presented annually by the South Carolina Art Education Association.

Nominations of visual arts teachers from South Carolina public schools can come from principals or other school administrators, fellow teachers, oneself or community leaders. Educators must complete the online application form and provide the additional materials:

The application components:
The following are components provided in the online form below:
• a paragraph summarizing your goals and accomplishments as a teacher
• a description of the lesson plan for the student images submitted. (All student work examples submitted do not have to be from this lesson, but please indicate those which are)
• resume that includes your work history and community involvement

The following components are submitted via email to :
• ten examples of student work (Please indicate the student examples that were produced with the submitted lesson plan. All examples do not have to be all from the submitted lesson plan.)
• examples of your own work
• two letters of recommendation

The Deadline to submit nominations is August 1 each year.

The Selection Process:
A panel of judges including Mary Whyte, the prize winner from the previous year, and representatives from the South Carolina Art Education Association will review the submitted applications and select a winner.
The overall winner will be selected by the panel and will be announced in the Fall at the annual SCAEA State Conference.

The Winner:
The Art Educator winner will be notified prior to the announcement, in order to be present at the SCAEA State Conference during which he or she will receive the $2,500 cash prize and a $2,500 gift certificate for art supplies. In addition, the winner will be expected to present a session at the following SCAEA Conference.
