Globally, there are approximately 1,350,000 people die on the road every year because of road traffic incidents. Between 20 to 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, and many occurring a disability as a result of the injury. More than half of all road traffic deaths are among vulnerable road users: pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death across all age groups globally.
In the Philippines, there are 11,096 recorded deaths in 2021, at least 84% of these deaths are among males. Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among Filipinos 15-29 years old, and a major killer among children.
