This is an open letter to the General Medical Council asking them to make the registration process for overseas-qualified doctors faster and more straight-forward.
If you are a doctor please sign to demonstrate your support.
This letter is being organised by RefuAid and Help Refugees and will be sent to the GMC.
To the General Medical Council
As NHS doctors we already work side by side with medical colleagues from around the world -- from Auckland to Aleppo; Karachi to Khartoum. The first four British doctors to die from Covid-19 were originally from Sudan, Pakistan and Nigeria, where they qualified. They gave decades of their lives to serve the people of the UK. At this moment of intense pressure, when our patients need us more than ever, we are asking you to streamline and speed up the registration of overseas-qualified doctors who are now living in the UK.
This crisis will continue for months, and with a quarter of all doctors already forced into self-isolation we need as many extra pairs of hands as possible. Each extra doctor will help save lives and relieve some of the pressure on our already overstretched healthcare system.
We are doing all we can. Please do what you can today to remove the administrative and financial barriers holding back our future colleagues from joining us on the frontline.
