2020 UAAB Advising Awards Nomination
The goal of the UAAB Awards Program is to encourage a wider support and recognition of outstanding advising at Virginia Commonwealth University. Awards are presented across five different categories to individuals who have demonstrated excellence in advising, innovation and administration. Please read each award description and submission guidelines carefully.

Award winners will be submitted to NACADA for Regional NACADA recognition.

If chosen for a finalist, the nominee will be required to provide additional information including: a letter of nomination and at least one letter of support, advising philosophy and/or resume/CV

Advising Award Categories
Excellence in Advising - Primary Advisor
Eligibility:
Individuals whose primary role at the institution is the direct delivery of academic advising services to students.

Criteria:
The UAAB Awards Committee will evaluate nominations on the evidence of qualities and practices that distinguish the nominee as an outstanding academic advisor.

Such evidence may include:
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Appropriate referral activity
- Use and dissemination of appropriate information sources
- Advisee or unit evaluations (summary data)
- Caring, helpful attitude toward advisees, faculty, and staff
- Meeting advisees in informal settings
- Monitoring of student progress toward academic and career goals
- Mastery of institutional regulations, policies, and procedures
- Participation in and support of advisor development programs
- Perception by colleagues of nominee's advising skills or advising administration skills
- Institutional recognition of nominee for outstanding advising and/or administration
- Participation in and contribution to academic advising research and scholarship
Excellence in Advising - Faculty Mentor
Eligibility:
Individuals who are not professional advisors who spend a portion of their time providing mentorship to students.

Criteria:
The UAAB Awards Committee will evaluate nominations on the evidence of qualities and practices that distinguish the nominee as an outstanding faculty mentor.

Such evidence may include:
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Appropriate referral activity
- Use and dissemination of appropriate information sources
- Caring, helpful attitude toward advisees, faculty, and staff
- Meeting advisees in informal settings
- Supporting of student progress toward academic and career goals
- Knowledgeable of institutional regulations, policies, and procedures
- Participation in and contribution to departmental research and scholarship
Excellence in Advising - Outstanding New Advisor
Eligibility:
Individuals who have demonstrated qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students and who have served as an advisor for a period of three (3) or fewer years.

Criteria:
The UAAB Awards Committee will evaluate nominations on the evidence of qualities and practices that distinguish the nominee as an outstanding academic advisor or faculty advisor.

Such evidence may include:
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Appropriate referral activity
- Use and dissemination of appropriate information sources
- Advisee or unit evaluations (summary data)
- Caring, helpful attitude toward advisees, faculty, and staff
- Meeting advisees in informal settings
- Monitoring of student progress toward academic and career goals
- Mastery of institutional regulations, policies, and procedures
- Participation in and support of advisor development programs
- Perception by colleagues of nominee's advising skills or advising administration skills
- Institutional recognition of nominee for outstanding advising and/or administration
- Participation in and contribution to academic advising research and scholarship
Excellence in Advising - Administrator
Eligibility:
Individuals who may provide direct academic advising services to students but whose primary responsibility is as an administrator or director of an academic advising program.

Criteria:
The UAAB Awards Committee will evaluate nominations on the evidence of qualities and practices that distinguish the nominee as an outstanding advising administrator.

Such evidence may include:
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Evidence of administering an academic advising program that supports NACADA's Core Values
- Evidence that the advising program reflects the standards of good practice in the CAS Standards & Guidelines for Academic Advising
- Ability to engage in, promote, and support advising grounded in sound theory, research, and educational practice
- Participation in and support of advisor development programs
- Testimony by colleagues of nominee's advising administration skills and/or performance
- Institutional recognition of nominee for outstanding advising or advising administration
- Evidence of student success rate, by advisor or by department, within the purview of the advising administrator
- Evidence of departmental growth & development brought forth under the direction of the advising administrator
- Evidence of successful collaboration with other academic or student support units on campus
- Caring, helpful attitude toward students, direct reports, and other campus colleagues
- Participation in larger campus or higher education initiatives related to the efficacy of academic advising
Outstanding Advocate for Academic Advising Award
Eligibility:
This award recognizes administrators who, while not directly involved in academic advising, exemplify commitment to the advising community and advocate for advising, students, and advisors on their campus

Criteria: The UAAB Awards Committee will evaluate nominations on the evidence of qualities and practices that distinguish the nominee as one who supports the mission of VCU and the advising community. The nominee should be someone who has made contributions to the VCU community, the profession of academic advising, leadership in the field of advising (as well as related areas) and/or shows a commitment to student success.
