Article 1, Section 2 of Minnesota’s constitution says: “There shall be neither slavery nor involuntary servitude in the state otherwise than as punishment for a crime”. This means in 2024 those in prison are legally slaves. We say "No slavery! Nowhere!"
Paying people in prison slave wages steals $100 million a year from the poorest communities in Minnesota, including children, families, and victims via child support and restitution.
Everyone in Minnesota is impacted by this: nearly half of prisoners are white, Greater MN has higher incarceration rates than the Metro, while Black and Native people are dramatically over-incarcerated. Ending slavery in Minnesota is the right thing to do, for our safety, communities, and futures.
Legislators, we call on you to pass
1. The Bill to End Slavery In Minnesota (2025) which "ends forced labor in Minnesota by reclassifying prisoners as workers with the right to employment"
2. The "End Slavery in the Constitution Bill" removing slavery from Minnesota's constitution and reclassifying prisoners as workers with the employment, sending it to voters in 2026
