We stand in solidarity with the Gwich’in Nation of Northeastern Alaska and Yukon and Northwest Territories in Canada who have relied on the Porcupine Caribou Herd for thousands of years, for food, cultural and spiritual needs. The Porcupine Caribou Herd migrates through to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge-Coastal Plain every year where they give birth and calve their young, up to forty thousand calves are born in a two week time in the spring. This area is known to the Gwich’in as “Iizhik Gwats’an Gwandaii Goodlit“ (The Sacred Place Where Life Begins).
Over the years veterans, recreational enthusiasts, and scientists have visited this magnificent place making it important to each of us. As Alaskans, we urge you to join us to seek and implement climate solutions that foster a fair, equitable, and just transition throughout Alaska.
