The Summer Youth Institute 2019
The Summer Youth Institute grew out of the minds and hearts of a group of college students who desired to help nurture and develop Mississippi’s next generation of leaders. These students, who were diverse across identities and experiences, sought to experience the ways in which their diversity was an asset in working together and to help other future cohorts of Mississippi youth do the same. Their vision, coupled with assistance from the Winter Institute and the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute, gave way to the first summer training in 2010 on the campus of the University of Mississippi, which has now evolved to serve twenty-eight rising high school sophomores and juniors annually for nearly a decade.

The 2019 Summer Youth Institute (SYI) is open to rising high school sophomores and juniors (current freshmen or sophomores) who are Mississippi residents.

This form is just the beginning of the application process. Students are not accepted by simply filling out this form. From the applications that we receive, approximately 50 students will be selected for telephone interviews. Only 28 Mississippi students will be selected to attend SYI, which runs from June 8th – 16th, 2019 in the state capital of Jackson on the campus of Millsaps College. For students who are accepted, the cost of attendance is FREE, but students will be responsible for their own transportation to and from Jackson for the Summer Youth Institute.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Wednesday, May 1st, 2019.

What we are looking for:
- Students who are both passionate about making positive changes in their communities and enthusiastic about learning new skills and forming new friendships.
- Students who are active in their communities or who are interested in becoming community leaders. Just because a student has not been involved in community work in the past doesn't mean that we won't consider her or him.
A note for families:
While we appreciate students from the same family applying, we are trying to reach as broad a range of students for the Summer Youth Institute as possible. If siblings do apply, only one may be accepted.
A note for students applying from the same high school:
In order to provide the most dynamic and diversity-rich experience for all of our students, the likelihood of more than two students from a single high school attending the Summer Youth Institute in a particular year is slim.
