Thank you for referring an older adult to Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly. To participate in LBFE friendly-visiting programs, older adults must be 65 years or older OR 60 years old and living with a disability that prevents them from leaving the home, live alone in San Francisco, and receive less than two social visits a month. Exceptions are made on a case by case basis: i.e. those living in assisted living facilities, living with a family member/caregiver, etc. Care providers or social workers/case managers are not considered social visitors. Please note that we may get in contact with you if we are in need of additional information or if it's determined that the elder is not eligible for our programs. We also ask you mention LBFE prior to referring the older adult. All LBFE programs are free of charge for the older adult.
As of March 13th, 2020, LBFE has pivoted all social programs to a remote/virtual modality. We are able to offer phone visiting where we match older adults 1:1 with volunteers who make friendly calls 1-2x per week. We are continuing to offer our intergenerational ("MISCI"), R.I.D.E., and Tech Allies 2.0 programs. For R.I.D.E, MSCI, & Tech Allies, the older adult must be involved in one of our core social programs to participate. We hope to bring back in person programs as COVID restrictions allow.
As of May 1st, 2022 LBFE referrals remain open and are transitioning back into in person assessments, while following necessary precautions. For monolingual non-English speakers, there is a waiting list as volunteer visitor language capabilities are currently limited.
