Public Comments for the Naming of the new Hoggard Gym after Coach Sheila Boles
The Board of Education accepted a proposal to name the new gymnasium at Hoggard High School in honor of Coach Sheila Boles.

Ms. Boles was a member of UNCW's first women's basketball team in 1973 and became the first female recipient of a scholarship one year later. A three-time team MVP for the Seahawks, Boles earned NAIA District 28 Player-of-the-Year honors in 1976. After graduation, Boles began a successful career in teaching and administration that lasted 31 years. She became the first woman in North Carolina to coach varsity boys' basketball at John T. Hoggard High School and led her teams to a school-best 167-121 record in 11 seasons. The Vikings advanced to the 4A playoffs 8 times during her stint on the sidelines.

Boles then served as Hoggard's athletic director for nine years. She was named Athletic Director of the Year by both North Carolina High School Athletic Association and the North Carolina Athletic Director's Association. Boles was also presented the NCHSAA's Special Person Award for her contributions to the sport in the state.

Sheila Boles is a cancer survivor, a mentor, and role model to others. Even after her retirement in 2009, Coach Boles continues to support Hoggard athletics.

Pursuant to School Board Policy 5400, the Board of Education will accept public comments for a period of six months, beginning April 4, 2017. Please complete this form with any comments regarding the naming of this facility.
