Girls Rock! Rhode Island GRIT Application 2018
Hello! We are so excited that you're interested in becoming a GRIT with Girls Rock! Rhode Island this year! Please read the information below fully and carefully before submitting your application.

**Important note** GRIT participation does not mean you can't attend Girls Rock Camp Session 2 for high school-age youth... in fact we encourage you to do both!

In its 6th year, the Girls Rock Internship and Training (GRIT) program seeks to provide a different experience for older return campers who want to engage in camp as youth interns and mentors to younger campers and learn more about the behind-the-scenes operations of how camp functions. The goals of the GRIT program include:
-Leadership
-Healthy Identity Development
-Reciprocal Learning (teaching others AND learning from others)
-Empowerment

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Girls Rock! Rhode Island's Girls Rock Internship and Training (GRIT) program takes place during Girls Rock Camp Session 1, July 16-20 at the Rhode Island Philharmonic in East Providence. During camp week, GRITs will assist adult volunteers with instrument instruction, devise and implement a plan for moving gear throughout the day, and serve as mentors to younger campers, setting a positive tone and role modeling supportive behavior. They will also participate in their own workshops and small group sessions to learn new music and critical thinking skills and engage in deeper conversations about leadership, identity, feminism and other topics. GRITs will also have their own band and write a song together during afternoon band practices to perform at the final showcase on Friday. It is important to be able to work cooperatively with other youth in the GRIT program while following the direction of coordinators and staff, move equipment safely and efficiently, and be ready to try and learn new things.

Please note: There are a limited number of spaces in the GRIT program, which requires an application process and, unlike camp, it is not first-come, first-served. All applications completed by the deadline will be considered.

GRITs are expected to:
-Commit to fully participating in the GRIT program, including the required training before camp, the full camp week (July 16-20), and the showcase on Friday, July 20
-Arrive on time each day, ready to participate; GRITs will arrive before other campers and stay later to debrief each day
-Role model supportive behavior and help create a positive environment for campers through positive and inclusive language and actions
-Demonstrate enthusiasm for the work at all levels, in instruction, gear systems/moving (there's a lot of gear to move and that's part of the job!), and in GRIT or camper workshops
-Exhibit interest in and willingness to engage in introspection and personal reflection around gender, oppression/privilege, teaching, learning, and leadership as well as societal systems that create these experiences
-Communicate to Girls Rock! RI staff and GRIT program coordinators if they experience any issues with campers, other GRITs, or camp volunteers
