Fairbanks Red Hackle Pipe Band - 2020 Winter Beginner Workshop
Want a preview? Come visit us at pipe band practice on Thursday, Jan. 16, 6:30-8:30pm at University Baptist Church, 1197 University Avenue, Fairbanks. You will get an idea what this is all about!
The first class will be Saturday, January 18, 1-5 pm at the University Baptist Church. It will be an introduction to the bagpipes, or Scottish snare drum, or to Highland dance. You are welcome to try all three and choose what interests you. The second class will be Saturday, January 25, also 1-5 pm, at the church. Subsequent class times and venues will be announced.
The band offers six lessons free of charge. Further lessons are required to become proficient on the pipes, the drums, and in Highland dance. This is a long-term effort. After 6 free lessons, students will be asked to join the band as student members, at a cost of $60 per year, payable annually or semi-annually.
Practice chanters for piping and practice pads for drumming are required. The band has a small inventory of each of these to loan, and more will be provided as needed, or students can buy their own at a cost of approx. $100. Information will be made available. If you’re interested in learning pipes, please note you will not need a set of pipes until a level of competence is reached. Teaching will be on practice chanters. This can take six months to a year or more, depending on each student’s rate of progress. If you wish to study drumming, the band will provide practice pads and sticks, and drums when a level of competence is achieved. No equipment is required for the early stages of dance training.
