Doris Buffett’s Learning by Giving Foundation (LxG) inspires and trains a new generation of leaders to be effective givers of their time, talent, and treasure. LxG supports accredited college courses on experiential philanthropy with real grant funds for each class to distribute to high-impact, local nonprofit organizations. Each course teaches students to understand the social and economic roles of the nonprofit sector and philanthropy, and the processes through which social change is funded and implemented across sectors. Students develop critical leadership and professional, interpersonal, and analytical skills as they carry out an effective philanthropic strategy in their local communities. In addition, community nonprofits use the revenue to impact those they serve, and colleges and universities strengthen their ties to their local communities.
The LxG Emerging Leaders Council (ELC) is a group of young passionate leaders from all backgrounds who want to develop their professional and personal skills, knowledge, and networks in order to become agents of change in their communities. The ELC is a leadership opportunity whose members advocate on behalf of LxG’s mission to engage and equip a new generation of philanthropic leaders who want to make a local impact. Through their time, talent, and treasure, ELC members strive to:
• Be the planning board of the LxG Emerging Leaders Network•Create educational, networking, fundraising and social events in order to educate and engage young professionals on philanthropy, nonprofits, and social impact• Help promote the mission and work of LxG to heighten its awareness in the community• Encourage and attract young professionals to the LxG Emerging Leaders Network, and help contribute to its growth when possible
ELC members commit to a two-year term, they dedicate between 5-10 hours a month, and contribute $180 to the Emerging Leaders Network each year. Benefits of getting involved include: becoming a key member of the LxG community, gaining professional skills and fostering new relationships, access to professional development opportunities, being recognized on the LxG website, receiving a free copy of Doris Buffett's new book "Letters to Doris", and more.
