Since the introduction of the Monome Grid and the Tenori-on in 2005/2006, musical grid interfaces have evolved from a niche product to an established interface element in the music-tech industry.

The following survey tries to evaluate the impact of this interface and tries to deduce future developments and design challenges in this domain. Further we try to generate a common understanding what defines a grid interface.
