Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Bayh Dole Act!
The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and the Association of American Universities (AAU) will host the third “University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Showcase,” featuring twenty university-affiliated startup companies from across the nation, April 28, 2020 on Capitol Hill. This showcase will also help us highlight the 40th anniversary of the Bayh-Dole Act, landmark bipartisan legislation authored by former Senators Birch Bayh (D-Indiana) and Bob Dole (R-Kansas) that revolutionized the way universities manage patenting and licensing and accelerated the transfer of groundbreaking discoveries to the marketplace.
Application Information
To be considered for the 2020 University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Showcase, completed applications are due by Thursday, February 27. The showcase will highlight the important role of federally funded university research in driving high-value entrepreneurship and the U.S. innovation economy. APLU and AAU member institutions are invited to nominate startups that have roots in federally-funded university research and would like to share their work to Members of Congress and their staff. Applications submitted in consultation with the nominating institutions’ government affairs/federal relations offices are strongly encouraged.
Preference will be given to universities that have earned APLU’s Innovation & Economic Prosperity (IEP) designation, which recognizes institutions with a demonstrable commitment to economic development and/or student-led startups. APLU and AAU will also seek to maximize institutional and disciplinary diversity and geographic representation of the participating startups. An external review team of technology transfer experts will help evaluate the applications. Selected startups’ designated contacts will be notified of the acceptance of their nomination by Monday, March 9.
Universities may nominate multiple startups. The participation fee is $500 per team and will be due upon notification of acceptance for the showcase. Participants will be fully responsible for exhibit and travel expenses.
