Sign-On Invitation for Future Physicians: In the Face of COVID-19 Medical Trainees Call for Urgent Action Connecting Health Disparities & Climate Change
As an organization of future physicians, the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) seeks to draw attention to the adverse COVID-19 health effects seen in communities disproportionately affected by climate change. For Earth Day 2020, we are building on our strong history in addressing climate change as a health issue and further emphasizing our commitment to this public health emergency by calling on medical students across the country to join us in demanding our elected officials take bold action to address health disparities, climate change, and COVID-19 by passing:

1) Legislation that guarantees COVID-19 vaccines and treatments are available to all with no out-of-pocket costs, and prohibits “pandemic profiteering” and “price-gouging”

2)The Green Streets Act (S.2084/H.R. 5354) to reduce dangerous greenhouse gas emissions that impact health especially in low-income and minority communities

As the physicians of tomorrow, it is not only our responsibility to recognize and treat the health consequences of climate change, but to fight for the mitigation of these health consequences. Our patients deserve healthy environments, food and water security, and climate change solutions.

As medical students and as future health professionals, we the undersigned, pledge to use our knowledge, interests and activism to improve environmental health for our patients as a necessary step to achieving health equity.
