Volunteering - Escape To Safety

Escape to Safety -A Simulated Experience of Asylum Seeking
@ Carlisle College, CA1 1HS

Monday February 26th - Friday March 8th 2024

A collaboration between Penrith & Eden Refugee Network (PERN), Carlisle Refugee Action Group (CRAG), Global Link (Lancs) & Carlisle College

‘Brilliant – makes you feel what it’s like to be a refugee’ (Secondary school pupil)

‘Changed my mind about refugees’ (Secondary school pupil)

Would you be interested in helping to raise awareness of the plight of asylum seekers coming to this country? We’re looking for volunteers to help with a powerful exhibition that is coming to Carlisle College.

‘Escape to Safety’ is an interactive, multimedia walk-through exhibition (designed by Global Link in Lancaster) where you put yourself in asylum-seekers’ shoes and listen to and experience refugees’ stories as you navigate through the exhibit and complete activities associated with it. It involves a powerful combination of a reconstructed journey with audio, some short films, VR, conversations with the students and thought-provoking introductory and follow-up exercises.

Closely linked to the schools’ curriculum and Post-16 studies, the project will be open to all the college pupils, local schools and the wider community. This is only possible with the invaluable help of volunteers, however, and we’re looking for people who would like to help make it happen. We need a small team each day to support the running of the exhibition and associated activities, and to chat to the students to ensure they gain maximum impact from it.

TRAINING AND INFORMATION
There will an initial information and training session at Carlisle College on Thursday 8th February 12-1pm and again at 4-5pm (please attend one) and further essential training once the exhibition is in situ on Friday 23rd February at 12-1pm and 4-5pm. There will also be easy to read briefing materials as supporting aids for you. There will be a choice of training sessions on offer; you only need to sign up for one. Please still sign up even if you can’t make these dates, we can work around that if necessary
