Background information
Lynx are medium-sized cats, similar in size to a Border Collie. They lived in Britain for thousands of years but are believed to have been extinct here by the Middle Ages due to habitat loss and hunting. By the middle of the 20th century, lynx had also been lost from most of Western Europe. Reintroductions began in Germany, Switzerland and Slovenia in the 1970s and, since then, reintroduction projects have helped re-establish populations of lynx in many other countries.

Research has shown that northern Scotland has enough suitable habitat and prey to support lynx, and that lynx released here could grow into a healthy population. We now want to develop a detailed understanding of the views of local communities. Further information is available:
  • In person at the Lynx to Scotland Information Sessions, held throughout the Highlands and Moray from 26th Jan - 23rd Feb 2026
  • Online on the Lynx to Scotland website (lynxtoscotland.org)
Participant information

Participation in this survey is entirely voluntary. You may stop completing the questionnaire at any time and your data will not be collected. Because responses are anonymous, once you submit your answers they cannot be withdrawn.

If you are aged 16 or under, please seek permission from a parent or guardian before taking part.

Your answers will remain anonymous. All data will be stored securely and handled in accordance with UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and Trees for Life’s Privacy Policy (treesforlife.org.uk/policies/). Anonymised responses may be used in reporting on this project, and results will be presented only in aggregated form so that no individual can be identified.

We are keen to understand community views in as much depth as possible and so, at the end of the questionnaire, you will have the option to provide contact details if you are willing to be approached for a follow-up conversation. Providing contact details is entirely voluntary and will not affect your anonymous survey responses.

Any contact information you choose to provide will be stored securely, kept separate from your survey answers, and deleted once any follow-up research is complete.

If you have any questions about this survey or how your data will be used, please contact: lynx@treesforlife.org.uk
