This presentation focuses on how to teach reading to intermediate ESL class by using enhancing personal involvement in the text. . The strategy includes three major tasks: The first one is based on developing the ability to summarize the context and be ready to discuss it, and then work on comprehension questions about the text in order to entrench understanding of the summary provided. The second strategy includes practice reading for gist to get the main idea in a short time. In the third strategy, students are provided with texts in which some words from different parts of speech are missing in order to encourage the students to focus on the main idea of the reading and the relationship of structure within sentences and between them. These strategies are also beneficial in teaching writing because this critical reading leads to understanding well- structured outlining, stronger idea development, and coherent organization of paragraphs.
