The Berkeley Free Clinic's Assisters Program enrolls people in health insurance as a Certified Enrollment Entity of the Berkeley Free Clinic. We train community members to become Certified Enrollment Counselors (CEC), authorized to help consumers enroll in health insurance through Covered California. By completing this training, you will be officiated as a CEC acting on behalf of the Berkeley Free Clinic.

Trainee Requirements (any clarifications on these requirements can be addressed over email or during the interview):
1) Attend ALL Trainings, which will be held EVERY Saturday in September and October 2017 from 10 AM to 4 PM
2) Commit to 4 appointment shifts per month during open enrollment (November-January). Each shift is 3 hours long. Shifts will be held from Tuesdays 6 PM to 9 PM and Saturdays 3 PM to 6 PM. Each shift holds two appointments. During an appointment. you can expect to answer clients questions, verify a client's identity, help them navigate through the application process and successfully enroll them in health insurance!
3) Attend at least one of the 1 hour long bi-weekly meetings per month (Date and Time TBA)
4) Complete an advanced training course and present a synopsis at one of the bi-weekly meetings BEFORE the end of training. This can be co-led/facilitated with other trainees.
5) Complete Shadow shifts: one observing a member on shift and one being observed on a shift by a member.
6) Complete 12 OST hours on a quarterly basis (Off Shift Tasks - involves committee tasks such as inreach/outreach efforts, teaching/attending continuing education sessions, and improving database and processes)
7) Commit to 1 call list shift in which you will call clients, understand their situation and sign them up for an appointment.

The average commitment to our program is 6 - 8 hours per week during open enrollment. This includes appointment shifts, call list shifts, OSTs, and section bi-weekly meetings.

Training will cover the following topics: Collectivity, Principles of Unity, Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, Building & Security, Al Clinic Introductions, HIPPA, Funding, Community Support, Counseling Tips, Case Management, Covered CA, Appointments & Clients, Online Training, and Advanced Training.

For existing BFC clinic members/trainees who have already completed certain courses, you will not be required to repeat them.

Interviews will be conducted in the first two weeks of August 2017.
