Flaming Lotus Girls: Crew Onboarding
Hello!
We're looking forward to you being a Flaming Lotus Girl- there are no prerequisites to joining, this form is just to help get you engaged. Indulge us in filling it out, even if you're super experienced and know all the things. We definitely want you, and you should come to the shop.

Haven build has completed for 2025 - and it went great! We likely won't build a new piece in 2026, as our crew needs to rest and allocate their energies elsewhere. Fill out this form and we'll reach out when we're ready to take newbies again!

Social media and pictures- we love having lots of pictures of our crew, builds, and sculptures, and we also respect that not everyone wants their picture taken, or wants it on social media. We have a process for FLG social posting that you'll get read in on later, but to start, if you're taking photos of people, ask first!  *

This is a somewhat anarchistic, feminist art group. Our general ethos is “don’t be an asshole.”

We’re a group of headstrong, creative, opinionated, and passionate people collaborating to make art. Friction happens, and that’s okay. When it does, you’re encouraged to talk to the person involved or to someone you trust for support.

Sometimes they’re the asshole, sometimes you’re the asshole, and sometimes it’s a mix of both. Talk, listen, seek understanding, embrace apologies, and make space to grow. This is how we support each other as artists and as people. It’s messy and full of subjective gray areas, but it’s also glorious and expansive.

That said:

Be safe for yourself and others. Don’t put others in danger. You are ultimately responsible for your own safety.

If you don’t know how to use a tool, ask! Folks may be unavailable in that moment, but don’t hesitate to request time for learning.

Unwanted attention, from comments on appearance, gender, sexual orientation, age, race, to sexual assault, is not tolerated. Consequences range from warnings to expulsion.

Don’t take tools out of anyone’s hands.

Avoid giving unsolicited advice. If you think you know a better way to do something, ask if they want help (once). Don’t assume your way is best—people have their own methods and expertise.

Be curious, assume no malice, ask questions, and apologize sincerely.

While all genders are welcome, please be cognizant that this is a femme and LGBTQI+ centered space. My cis hetero dudes, you are probably a nice human, but be aware of yourselves in this context, and graciously step back to make room for others.

If someone makes you feel unsafe or unwelcome, please report it in person or by emailing crew-support@flaminglotus.com.

This is an industrial environment, and you'll be learning industrial skills. Dressing for the part will help you be safe and not destroy your clothes.

Wear comfortable, low-flammable clothes that you don't mind getting dirty and torn.  Avoid fully-synthetic materials that melt. Go for clothes made out of at least 50% cotton blends or better- think jeans, long sleeve Ts or flannels. There are some good work pant brands out there like Red Ants Pants, Dovetail, carhartt.

Closed toe shoes or boots, heavier canvas, kevlar, or leather are best. Safety toes are always recommended!

Something warm (The Box Shop is next to the bay therefore can get quite COLD)

Leather or similar work gloves that fit. Welding and other hot work doesn't go well with nylon, latex or fabric gloves. (we have some for you to use, but you'll be most comfortable with your own)

Safety glasses- its nice to have your own pair that you like (we have them for you to use as well)

Ear protection can be really nice to have, you never know how loud the box shop will be (we often have this as well but sometimes run out)

Head covering/hair containment. Bandanas, welding caps, etc., can be nice for helping to project your head/hair from sparks and particulate. If you have long hair, you'll need to have it secured back.

Water Bottle (you'll get thirsty)
