Communal youth letter to BOD: Speak up against annexation
(SIGN BELOW THE LETTER)

To the Honorary Officers of the Board of Deputies,

We are young members of the Jewish community – present and recent movement workers, youth movement bogrimot, members of synagogues and members of Jewish Societies on campus. We are a collective who support Israel’s right to thrive as a Jewish and democratic state and we are writing to you because we are deeply troubled by Israel’s proposed annexation of West Bank territory.

As the leadership of the British Jewish community, we urge you to speak up against the unilateral annexation of the West Bank, which will have far-reaching ramifications not only for the region and its inhabitants, but also for us as Jews in the diaspora. These ramifications will be permanent and will truly destroy a long-term vision of peace. We recall the Board of Deputies’ historical support for a negotiated two-state solution, which means that when Israel takes decisive unilateral action that will render a two-state solution impossible to achieve, the Board of Deputies has a responsibility to speak out against it.

Annexation poses a very serious threat to Israel’s diplomatic standing and national security. It will lead to the collapse of Israeli security coordination with both the Palestinian Authority and Jordan which have been crucial to maintaining peace. Hundreds of former Israeli generals of the Shin Bet, Police and Mossad have released a statement saying that this unilateral action is a ‘security nightmare’ for Israel.

The annexation of West Bank territory would constitute the final nail in the coffin of a viable two-state solution. Israel cannot unilaterally annex the West Bank and be both Jewish and democratic. Israel will be forced to become either a binational and non-Jewish state, or a state in which Palestinians are ruled by Israel but are denied equal rights and freedoms. Last week, 56 former MKs and ministers signed an advert stating that ‘annexation would mean a fatal blow to the possibility of peace and would be the foundation of an apartheid state.’

This will greatly impact the way in which young people in our community engage with Israel. In our youth movements, synagogues, and schools, we learn from a young age about the importance of Israel to the Jewish people, and Israel plays an important role in the formation of most young people’s Jewish identities. As young British Jews we are also brought up to celebrate liberal democracy, multiculturalism, and equality. Annexation is incompatible with these values, values which are already endangered by the status quo in Israel which has disillusioned many young British Jews who struggle to reconcile these values and their relationship to Israel with the situation in the region. This is not about rejecting Israel and Zionism but defending a vision of them which does not compromise our broader belief in democracy and equality. Without that vision, a healthy future relationship between young Jews and the State of Israel cannot be guaranteed.

We are also concerned about how annexation will impact our safety. As young Jews, many of us have experienced antisemitism and have been impacted by anti-Jewish hate on our campuses. Unilateral annexation will result in a destabilised and more violent region, and we know that when violence increases in the region, there are consequences for Jews in the diaspora, with increased antisemitism across the world.

Being a true friend to Israel means speaking out. We urge you to use your position of leadership within the British Jewish community and your broader influence to speak up against the proposed annexation, in order to protect Israel as a Jewish and democratic state, to protect human rights in the region, and to support a thriving and safe British Jewish community. Failure to do so will pose serious questions regarding the relevance of the Board of Deputies for our generation.

When so much is at stake, please do not remain silent.

Signed,
