KWL+
This is a nice tool for starting any kind of research. Right now, you've probably got some kind of idea about what issue you're interested in learning more about now that you've read the articles and posted in the Discussion... but maybe it's still kind of fuzzy. So do this... should take you 30 minutes or so. And use it again if you get stuck.

The trick here is to just start writing. Set the timer on your smartphone and go. Somehow, the brain just freaks out with a timer and gives you stuff you didn't even know you had in mind.

There are a couple of other tricks along the way that I'll mention...

But for now, do this and submit it (mostly a way for us to keep a copy). Go!

Name please! *
What topic/issue would you like to know more about? This can be a question if you'd like *
K-KNOW: Set your timer for five minutes. Start and don't stop! If you get stuck, write "I'm stuck!" and keep going. What do you write? Everything you can about what you already KNOW about this issue. *
W-WANT: Set your timer for another five mintues. This time you'll write about what you WANT to know about the issue. This is where you use one of those tricks -- the Journalist's Questions, also known as the 5Ws and 1H: ask who, what, when, where, why, and how questions about the issue? When did it first become an issue? Who's involved? Etc. Start writing and don't stop! *
Now it's time to hit Google+Wikipedia and start doing a little research. Time yourself -- 10-15 minutes or you'll be tempted to just get lost clicking links :-). Check the box when you're done. *
Required
L-LEARNED: Another five minutes. Again, write the whole time. Write what you learned from your 10-15 minutes of internet research
+-STILL WANT TO KNOW: This is the most important question (but we had to do all of the above to get there!). After doing this basic internet research, what are some questions about your issue that you still want to know. If you discover you've kind of changed your focus, that's fine -- that's what research is all about -- because you may have stumbled onto something more interesting and/or important. So now follow that one, ask more questions. Limit yourself to 5 minutes here. *
