The Water Quality Monitoring Program (WQMP) is a consistent, long-term monitoring effort to measure water quality across Lake Pend Oreille and the Pend Oreille River. This is a citizen-science initiative led by dedicated community volunteers, known as water quality stewards. The program’s goals are to inform the public and provide high-quality scientific data that regulatory agencies can use when making water quality-based decisions for our local waterways.
All volunteers are required to attend a sample collection training. We will hold training sessions at Windbag Marina on May 1st and May 8th, from 5:30-7:30pm. You only need to attend ONE training.
Monthly stewards commit to sampling one of our stations once a month, from May through September. We typically sample on the third Tuesday of each month. All stewards must have their own watercraft (kayak, canoe, or boat).
We have a substitute steward option for those who are unable to commit to one day a month of monitoring, but would still like to participate. Substitutes will be called when a regular steward is unable to collect samples. We try to give at least a week's notice when possible.
