SPEECH CONTESTS begin in the fall of each year for Humorous Speech and Table Topics and in January for the International Speech Contest and Speech Evaluation. Contestants first compete at the Club level with winners moving on to their Area, Division and District contests. Winners of the International Speech from all District contests move on to compete at the World Championship of Public Speaking held annually at the Toastmasters International Conference each summer.
CONTEST JUDGES at club contests shall be a Toastmasters member in good standing. All judges at area, division, district, semifinal, and International speech contests shall have been a member in good standing since July 1 of the previous year and have completed at least six Competent Communication manual projects.
INTERNATIONAL SPEECH CONTESTANTS are required to have completed at least 6 speeches from the Competent Communication manual prior to the club contest. No minimum is required for Humorous, Table Topics or Evaluation.
"SUBSTANTIALLY ORIGINAL" speeches are required by the rulebook and is defined as the majority of a speech must be the speaker's own original material. Citations can be used as long as the speaker references the original source. If quotes are used too often in a speech, the majority of the content is no longer considered an original work and the speaker can be disqualified on the basis of originality.
SEC Roughriders is Toastmasters International Club 1876 within District 46 that encompasses over 230 clubs in New York City, Long Island and Westchester. District 46 regularly earns top honors of international ranking.
