This hands-on class for librarians and library staff, will cover the health information seeking behavior of consumers and the role of the librarian in the provision of health information for the public. Come learn about the evolution of consumer health, health literacy and the e-patient. Participants will be equipped with knowledge of top consumer health sites, e-patient resources and collection development core lists. We will discuss creative ideas for health information outreach. The class will wrap up with an opportunity to explore effective marketing approaches and develop an elevator speech.
Objectives: This class teaches you the basics of providing consumer health information at your library. We will cover:• History and evolution of consumer health• Challenges of providing consumer health information at your library• Planning a consumer health service• Collection development• Consumer health on the Internet• The reference interview• Ethics• Outreach• Project development / marketing

This presentation, for librarians, library staff, and community partners provides an overview of ideas to conduct health outreach and offer health programs to the public. Participants will learn how to introduce community members toresources from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and other reputable agencies in fun and engaging ways.
This interactive workshop will emphasize the active role one can have in their own healthcare through the patient-doctor relationship. A “program in a box”, Engage for Health, has been developed and piloted in public libraries in partnership with health care providers. This program offers library staff and community partners a fully assembled program for their public. The toolkit for the Engage for Health program includes the presentation slides, speaker notes, role play exercise, pre-post evaluation form, promotional poster and logo and is freely available.
Objectives: This presentation provides an overview of planning health programs for organizations incorporating resources from the National Library of Medicine. By the end of the session participants will be able to:• Locate county level information on health needs within their community• Locate relevant NLM consumer health resources for specific target populations• Identify organizations for health outreach partnerships• Locate Engage for Health materials to present this program at libraries
