The Institute Discovering Environmental Scientists (TIDES) and Mid Hudson Young Environmental Scientists (MH-YES) are paid summer field and laboratory science experiences where participants work in teams to conduct water and land-based research along the banks of the Hudson River and local streams. Students work with educators and scientists to formulate scientific questions, gather field and lab data, and do their own analyses. The goal is to help students explore environmental research as something they might want to do in their future studies and work.
Application Deadline: May 13, 2024
You are invited to apply to one or both programs and can indicate your interest and availability for the two programs in this application.

Eligibility:
Any local high school or undergraduate student is eligible to apply.
NOTE: The MH-YES program is seeking three undergraduates students to be mentors to the high school participants. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Rebecca Van Tassell at
vantassellr@caryinstitute.org.
Selection criteria:
We select participants based mainly on their desire to do field and laboratory research. We are interested in what you are doing in school, but we do not assess applicants based on grades or test scores. Rather, we take into consideration the collective backgrounds and life experiences (including social, cultural, familial, educational, or other opportunities or challenges) of applicants so that we create a team representing diverse strengths and perspectives.
Through these summer research opportunities, we strive to champion equity and inclusion in order to broaden the field of ecology. Providing opportunities to students from disadvantaged communities and groups currently underrepresented in the field is a high priority for our programs. We encourage everyone to apply and understand if you prefer not to answer identity questions on the application.
You will be working in teams collaborating on projects, and spending much of the day outside or in a laboratory. If this sounds like a great way to spend two to five weeks of your summer, we would love to work with you!
Transportation:
If students need transportation, arrangements may be made with our staff.
