The Urgent Threat of Climate Change and Our Professional and Moral Obligation to Act

An Open Letter from the Faculty and Staff Divestment Network

If you work at a college or university in the U.S. and are concerned about climate change, please sign on to this letter. We will do a press release once we get 200 names.

There is a scientific consensus on the effects of global climate change and its impacts on societies around the world, especially on the poorest and most vulnerable among us.

We, the signatories of this letter call upon universities and colleges across the nation to divest from fossil fuels. We do this to send a strong signal that that we need urgently to move away from fossil fuel use and extraction. We need to undermine the control that fossil fuel companies have over governmental energy policies. Additionally, fossil fuel divestment is in alignment with the fiduciary responsibilities of our foundations, because as we move to address climate change, the majority of the assets of fossil fuel companies will need to remain unused. Thus, fossil fuel divestment, is both financially prudent, and the right thing to do.

It is our generation’s moral obligation to take immediate action against the threat that climate change poses to our future.
